Cosmetic dermatology is the branch of dermatology that uses different
methods to improve the looks of a person. This involves removing scars,
hair restoration, unwanted hair removal and removing signs of aging such
as crow feet and laughter lines. The different procedures are briefly
mentioned in the following paragraphs.
Botulinum Rejuvenation, popularly known as Botox is the most common form
of treatment for wrinkles and lines. The procedure involves injecting
medication called botulinum toxin into the affected area which targets
the nerve signals going to these areas, thus temporarily removing the
unwanted lines. The signs of aging treated by this method include laughter
lines, crow’s feet, frown lines and neck bands. The procedure, though
effective, is temporary in nature with the result lasting for duration
of about 3-4 months.
Chemical peeling is generally used to get rid of ugly scars such as those
left by acne. Other conditions treated include discoloration, pigmentation,
dull complexion, freckles and age spots. The procedure involves application
of chemical that peels away the upper layer of the skin. The problem gets
treated when a new layer forms through skin rejuvenation. The treatment
involves around 3-5 sittings with the dermatologist to get the required
result. The procedure itself is safe and effective; however its effect
does not last for a very long time and cannot stop the normal aging process
of the skin.
Dermabrasion uses the process of sanding to gradually remove the upper
layer of the skin. As the skin heals itself the scars and spots get removed
in the process. The process is very useful in removing shallow scars left
by acne and wrinkles appearing above the lip. The process of dermabrasion
may be combined with other cosmetic procedure to improve skin texture
and overall look of the person undergoing the treatment. It is very effective
in treating scars left by chickenpox, accident or acne. The result of
dermabrasion may last for as long as ten years provided proper skin care
routine is followed.
Hair restoration is the procedure used to restore hair in bald or semi-bald
people. The different methods for hair restoration are hair transplantation,
which involves removing part of scalp that has good hair growth and transplanting
it to the bald area; scalp reduction, which involves reducing the bald
area and getting the scalp with good hair growth closer to the bald area;
scalp expansion and scalp flaps. Among these hair transplant is the most
popular treatment used for reducing baldness. Other than this, newer techniques
such as micro-graft, mini-graft and single-hair graft are also used to
restore hair. The results are generally seen after 6-8 months, once the
hair start growing on the area that was treated. Hair transplant is a
permanent solution; however it may need to be repeated for other areas
of the head.
Cosmetic dermatology is used to improve appearance and dermatologists
carrying out the process are medically qualified to do so. Most dermatologists
tell their patients the duration of the treatment, precautions to be taken
before and after the treatment, anticipated results and side effects,
if any. All the cosmetic procedures are simple and safe to be used on
adults, however the precautions mentioned by the dermatologist need to
be followed strictly to see the desired result.
